The wonder of ‘My Fair Lady’ is that it was one of the greatest musicals about a love story and yet the word love was never once mentioned.

When we were out of town with the show, there was a beautiful song written for Eliza called ‘Shy’. It came just after ‘The Rain in Spain’ and if I can remember it the lyric went something like this…

Where are the words I long to hear,
Where are the words I long to say,
Why can’t we open our hearts and let them fly,
Oh, why are we all so shy.

Why are we always afraid
To hold out a hand and lead the way.
Must all the love in the world
Go wandering silently by
Leaving us here, year after year,
Too shy.

It was a beautiful song and to my dismay it was cut, even before we got the show up on its feet. Alan Jay Lerner, Moss Hart, Frederick Loewe, realized that George Bernard Shaw never once allowed Eliza and Higgins to speak of their love.

Well, I was sad that my beautiful song had been cut and taken away and lo and behold, a couple of days later, I was handed another song! One of the great love songs and there’s not a mention of the word love in it. It’s called ‘I Could Have Danced All Night’ and that one did stay in the show. - Julie Andrews
